Food Trucks Bring Excitement to Rochester
Food trucks have become an exciting part of any city’s growing business community. They are able to provide a quick mobile meal on the go; they can enrich neighborhoods that have limited meal options; and they can build a large following of supporters who seek them out through innovative outreach campaigns and social media efforts.
I’m thrilled to have such a large number of active food trucks in our community, and eager to begin the food truck pilot program downtown. At our May 2013 City Council meeting, we voted to impliment a downtown pilot program for food trucks. The legislation was researched and proposed by my colleague Councilwoman Carolee Conklin in conjunction with our City Clerk, Dan Karin.
Starting in June, the City will have three new vending locations downtown for food trucks, which can accommodate up to 6 trucks.
- State Street (south of Morrie Silver Way): 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
- Andrews Street (east of Front Street): 7:00 am – 8:00 pm
- Broad Street (west of south Avenue): 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
The pilot program will run from June until December 2013. At the conclusion of the pilot program, council will evaluate the successes and challenges of the program with input from community stakeholders. These conversations will allow for potential expansion to additional sites downtown, and will find ways to better establish vending locations for food tucks throughout the city. Before the pilot program was enacted, food trucks were not permitted to vend downtown. With the passage of this legislation, it is my hope that these trucks will be successful in expanding our business community and that this new program will enhance the quality of our downtown experience.
If you are interested in seeing the large swath of new food truck restaurants in the area, come to The Food Truck Rodeo and see all of these restaurants on wheels.
The Food Truck Rodeo brings our community’s eclectic array of mobile food stands together atthe Rochester Public Market (280 N. Union Street).
